Teachers Receive Grants from MFI

A total of 21 Minnesota teachers have been awarded Forest Education Grants from Minnesota Forest Industries. The program was created by Minnesota Forest Industries to help schools fund classroom projects and activities, including field trips, on topics related to forestry or forest products in Minnesota.

Since the program’s inception in 2005, more than $25,000 has been distributed to further forestry education in our state.

“Minnesota’s forests are healthy, thanks in part to the fine work these teachers do in educating our youth,” said Minnesota Forest Industries Executive Vice President Wayne Brandt. “We’re happy to help these fine educators with this important work.”

Teachers receiving grant funds include:

Douglas Ploof, a 12th grade teacher at Little Falls Community High School;

Mark Brandt, a 10-12th grade teacher at Eagan High School;

Rob Marohn, a 5th grade teacher at Bay View Elementary School in Proctor;

Beth Hoagland, a K-12th grade teacher in Floodwood;

James Rue, a K-12th grade teacher at Valley Branch Environmental Learning Center in St. Paul;

Abbi Case, a 5th grade teacher at Cedar Creek Community School in East Bethel;

Robin Halverson, a 6th grade teacher at Forestview Middle School in Baxter;

Beth McKenna, a 4th grade teacher at Eagle View Elementary in Pequot Lakes;

Shandy Geisler, an 11-12th grade teacher at Deer River High School;

Deana Lorenson, a 3-6th grade teacher at International Falls Elementary School;

Chris Lysaker, a 5-6th grade teacher at Nashwauk-Keewatin;

Ann Russ, a 3-5th grade teacher at Sawtooth Mt. Elementary in Grand Marais;

B. J. Kohlstedt, a K-6th grade teacher at North Shore Community School in Duluth;

Janelle Field, a 4-6th grade teacher at Belgrade-Brooten-Elvola Elementary School;

Jolene Landwer, a K-3rd grade teacher at Vandyke Elementary in Coleraine;

Leann Pietrzak, a 9-12th grade teacher at Mora Public Schools;

Carrie Otis, a 9-12th grade teacher at Minnesota Internship Center High School in Minneapolis;

Joe Beattie, an 11-12th grade teacher at Hastings High School,

Kurt Voelkner, a 6-8th grade teacher at Bemidji Middle School

Chuck Plantz, a 7-9th grade teacher at Pine River-Backus High School

Karen Christenson, a licensed elementary teacher and volunteer facilitator with the DNR’s Project Learning Tree in Cohasset.

Minnesota Forest Industries is an association representing the state’s forest product companies. MFI encourages conservation, proper forest management and industry development.
